Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster.Whoa. Alexandra Bracken has written another amazing book to add to The Darkest Minds series. Bracken does not disappoint! This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.
As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?
I was deeply impressed with this novel. Second-book-in-the-series are prone to having second book syndrome. Alexandra Bracken ensured that this book didn't have it! I loved this book! The writing has greatly improved. The writing is more descriptive and abstract. The story isn't told in a straight-forward way. Hard to explain but well done Ms. Bracken! Ruby has fantastic character development in this book. She is so much stronger now. She stands up for herself. She's assertive and independent. She. Is. Awesome. I love Liam Stewart!! He's so sweet and kind and naive and optimistic. Chubs is so funny and smart. We meet some new characters in this book! I really like Vida. She's hilarious and the best comedy relief :) Jude is so cute and and adorable. Cole Stewart. Hot. There was so much action and mystery in this book. It was just amazing.
There were only a few things that I didn't like. Never Fade lacked romance for most of the book (until near the end). I truly missed the happiness and light moments that we saw in The Darkest Minds even though the world was a sad disaster. I would have liked more light moments in this book. Never Fade was a bit boring in parts. I felt like the story was dragging a little in a few places. Some parts where a little confusing and hard to follow. There's a lot of world building in the beginning.
Overall, this book was fantastic! I loved it, and can not wait for the final book out later this year.
