First rule of dealing with hot vampire bodyguards? Don't fall in love.

After losing both her parents before age seventeen, aspiring designer Caitlin Holte feels like her whole world has been turned upside down, and that was before the terrifying encounter with a supernatural force. Then, she learns that her hot bad- boy neighbor, Adrian—who might have just saved her life—is actually a half- demon vampire.

Suddenly Caitlin is stuck with a vampire bodyguard who feels that the best way to protect her is to become her pretend boyfriend. Trouble is, Caitlin is starting to fall in love for real, while Adrian can never love a human. Caitlin trusts Adrian to keep her safe from his demon father, but will he be able to protect her heart?

I sped through this book late last night, and it's honestly one of the most fun reads I've had in a long time! Velvet is loads of fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. I couldn't stop grinning while reading this. If you need a pick-me-up, this is the book for you!

Velvet was just the book I was in the mood for. Something kind of horrible happened yesterday, and this book actually had me laughing out loud and captivated my attention. It's care-free and fun and addictive. Temple's writing is quirky and fun; her writing has such a sass and spark to it. There are so many quotable lines

I love the protagonist, Caitlin, and her hilarious inner-thoughts and dialogue. She's got a sparkly personality, and I could see some of Temple in there! I love when writers infuse a bit of themselves into their character(s). Adrian is a hottie through and through, and I love how awkward yet sexy he is. The other characters aren't as significant, but they sure are vivid and unique.

The romance in this book is all flirty and adorable. It was fun, and those two have such an awesome dynamic. I love the banter and the hilarious moments that are all too often.

Unlike most paranormal books, this one explains how and why and what exactly vampires are. They get into demons and other science-y stuff. This put a unique spin on the usual paranormal tale. Usually we're told they're vampires "just because" or they don't know why, or it just happened. It was great to have some concrete details on the matter!

“Sorry I dragged you away from dinner,” I said, realizing the time. “You want to eat with us?”
He seemed to consider it, then shook his head. “I’d better get back. Gotta take my medication.”
I arched a brow questioningly. “I thought your immune system kicked ass?”
He laughed. “Sorry, ‘medication’ is what we call it when we need to drink blood. It’s kind of an inside joke.”
“Oh.” I said, blushing for some reason. I should have kept my mouth shut, but curiosity got the better of me. “Does it…taste good?”
He stared at me for a long moment, before his gaze drifted down to my neck.
“You can’t imagine.”
My pulse jumped, half in fear and half in…something else. His voice had gone low and liquid, his eyes were burning silver.
“Hey Cait?” he murmured, and though he hadn’t moved an inch, it felt as though he were leaning towards me.
“Yeah?” I whispered.
He wasn’t looking at me in the eye anymore, just staring somewhere above my chest and below my jaw. The sound of my own heart seemed loud in my ears, and if I could hear it, so could Adrian.
His eyes flicked to my face. “You should really get out now.”
I blinked. “Yeah.”

I scrambled to undo my seatbelt and almost fell out of the truck. I could hear the click of the automatic locks snapping into place the moment the door was closed. Adrian peeled out of the driveway, back into darkness.

Temple West, debut author of the YA paranormal romance Velvet, is as nerdy in real life as she is on the Twitter. Armed with a very shiny English degree, she spent four months in Oxford holed up at the Radcliffe Camera amongst the hush of ancient books and the rich musk of academia. Returning to Los Angeles, she acquired a concurrent degree in film, mostly as an excuse to write essays about The Princess Bride and Hook. She can sew (poorly), drive stick (please fasten your seatbelt), and mostly lift her feet off the ground while stuttering into first gear on a very small motorcycle. She currently lives in Seattle and is the proud mother to a one-year-old laptop and a vintage Remington typewriter.

  2. How cute was this book though, I read it as well & I did like it overall!:) The cover is AMAZING though, it's actually very unique with the font velvet wrapped around the girl's arm. I'm glad you could enjoy it, lovely review <3 Benish | Feminist Reflections

  3. I'm glad that this book was able to take your mins off things, I hope things are better for you. I haven't been reading the best reviews so far for this book, but your rating does make me super curious! Fab review!

  4. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one Rachel! I've heard some mixed things, so I think I'll have to pick it up for myself. I am all for a good, cute romance! I also like how you said it goes into detail explaining the paranormal aspect. That is awesome!

Big hugs to you hun. I don't know what happened, but it will be ok!

  5. I'm one of the few people that actually like vampire novels so this one is definitely on my TBR. I hope I enjoy it as much as you did.

    Hope things are okay! :)

  6. Gosh, I could really use a fun-filled narration right now. The last time I had laughed at a character's narration and her wit was Anatomy of a Misfit, which feels like an eternity ago! Very unsure about the Vampire thingy, but I could give this one a try if it brings fresh air into an overused sub genre!

  7. I have had my eye on this for awhile. I was drawn in first because of the cover, of course, but then the synopsis sounded promising. Your review has sold me. I love a character that can make me laugh! Yes please.

  8. Okay if anything I want to read this because the author is adorable! I love her hair SO MUCH and I love how hilarious she is in the "why should you read my book" video. :P I would definitely read it just because she's bubbly, and I'm sure that translates into her writing! I've had my eye on this because that cover is gorgeous, and I've been wanting to sink my teeth into something with vampires (no pun intended...heh). I feel like vampires exploded years ago and then petered off...but sometimes I really want to read a vampire story! Great review, Rachel. :)

  9. I'm not a fan vampire novels but after reading through your review, I kind if want to read this. It sounds like a fun and quick read. This could probably make me want to read vampire novels :)
