#MeetTheNewbs ~ Gina Ciocca Author of Last Year's Mistake (Guest Post+Giveaway)

Meet The Newbies is a blog event co-hosted by Dana @DanaSquare and I, in which we introduce you to all of the new kids in school, the 2015 debut authors!

Meet Gina Ciocca:

Gina Ciocca graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in English. She lives in Georgia with her family. Gina is a member of the writing and blogging group YA Misfits and you can find her online at WritersBlog-Gina.blogspot.com. Last Year’s Mistake is her first novel.

Meet Her Debut Novel:

Kelsey and David became best friends the summer before freshman year and were inseparable ever after. Until the night a misunderstanding turned Kelsey into the school joke, and everything around her crumbled—including her friendship with David. So when Kelsey's parents decided to move away, she couldn't wait to start over and leave the past behind. Except, David wasn't ready to let her go...

Now it's senior year and Kelsey has a new group of friends, genuine popularity, and a hot boyfriend. Her life is perfect. That is, until David's family moves to town and he shakes up everything. Soon old feelings bubble to the surface and threaten to destroy Kelsey's second chance at happiness. The more time she spends with David, the more she realizes she never truly let him go. And maybe she never wants to.

Told in alternating sections, LAST YEAR'S MISTAKE is a charming and romantic debut about loving, leaving, and letting go.

Today is Gina's birthday!! Happiest of birthdays to her <3 Today she's sharing some random facts about her and giving a sneak peak of the annotated ARC of Last Year's Mistake that she'll be giving away.

Guest Post:

I’m so excited to be part of Meet the Newbies here at A Perfection Called Books! Huge thanks to Rachel and Dana for having me.
My debut novel, LAST YEAR’S MISTAKE, releases 29 days from today – today, which happens to be my birthday. But since I’ve refused to acknowledge any change in my age for the past five years or so, *you’re* getting the gift – in the form of a chance to win an annotated ARC of LYM!
And, since we’re giving away a book with inside information and little-known tidbits, I thought I’d stick with that theme for this post and offer some random facts about myself, and some sneak peeks into what you’ll learn from my (badly handwritten) look behind the scenes at LYM. Enjoy!
Random Facts About Gina
As I mentioned, today is my birthday. The year I was born, it fell on Mother’s Day. So my mom got the best mother’s day present ever, in the form of her first child – me
My husband and I were high school sweethearts. I’d never met him prior to freshman year, and we started dating senior year. But our families knew each other for years before we’d ever laid eyes on each other, and our mothers went to high school together.
I love music, but my knowledge of 90’s hip hop would probably astound you.
You’d probably also be astounded by the amount of food I can put away. And maybe a little grossed out. I am always hungry.
Embarrassing High School Moment Alert: I had zero fashion sense when I got to high school, thanks to spending 8 years wearing a uniform in Catholic grade school. One day I decided to make an attempt at dressing up, and wore a skirt. I borrowed a pair of heels from my mother, which I stupidly wore while walking to the bus stop. I fell, ripped my tights, and scraped my knee in front of all my neighbors. And worse, instead of turning around and going home, I got on the bus and went to school with a bloody leg and a gaping tear in my pantyhose. (Psst! If you’re willing to share your own #AwfulHSMoment, head over to my blog for details on a second giveaway! http://writersblog-gina.blogspot.com/)

A Sneak Peek at What’s Inside Gina’s Annotated ARC of LAST YEAR’S MISTAKE
I often refer to LYM as “the book that Back To December wrote,” because so many things about it remind of the Taylor Swift song. The first time I heard it, the book was already mostly written, so most of the similarities are a coincidence. BUT – there is one line that I purposely added as a reference to the lyrics.

Sometimes, it’s REALLY hard to make your characters keep their hands off each other. Which is why you’ll find this note about a tense scene on page 110:

There is a nickname Kelsey assigns to Isabel, her nemesis. It’s actually a reference to an incident with sloppy joe sandwiches, but also to an inside joke that my husband and I have about sloppy joes. But since most readers (like, everyone who does not win this ARC) won’t know that, it *probably* would’ve been a good idea to pick a different nickname.
Kelsey and I share an #AwfulHSMoment. Luckily, mine was not quite as embarrassing as hers.

And last but not least…

My favorite scene is also the one that inspired LYM’s cover. It definitely involves David and Kelsey on the hood of a car. It might involve kissing. Or it might involve that serious restraint I talked about earlier.
Guess you’ll have to read the book to find out….
Good luck to all the entrants!
