The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski (The Winner's Curse #1)

The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski

Page Length: 355 pages

Rating: 4 Stars

"Winning what you want may cost you everything you love.

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction.

Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart."

A group that I moderate on Goodreads, The Wide Web of Friends is going to have a Q&A session with the author of this book! So if you have any questions, ask here

I had high hopes and high expectations. I'm proud to say this book didn't disappoint and left me yearning for the next book. After having read The Winner's Curse, I can honestly say that I have never read anything like it.

I was deeply impressed with the world-building. Everything was explained in detail and at the perfect timing. Rutkoski didn't just dump tons of information on us from the beginning. She slowly worked in all of the necessary information and slowly showed us the setting. She painted the picture beautifully ;)

The plot was unique and fantastic. (I can't really say more without spoiling you though, so just go read!) The writing was phenomenal. There were varied sentences and great word choices. Not everything started with "He was...." or "She went... " There was a sophistication to the writing that I greatly admired. I couldn't stop reading once I'd started. I just had to know what happened next! Rutkoski managed to keep me interested and invested in the plot throughout the book. I didn't like the third person point of view though. It didn't make me connect with any of the characters or their feelings.

I did like the characters though. Kestrel was a great main character. I liked how she's keen and sharp and a great strategist. I also liked that Rutkoski didn't portray her as a kickbutt heroine like so many other YA writers do their protagonists. Not all main characters have to be freaking ninjas to be awesome. Thanks for showing us that there are other kinds of strengths besides the physical, like the mental strength that Kestrel has. Arin was okay. I liked how wild and free he is. He's an enigma and a born leader. I don't know why, I  just don't like him as much as I usually like the protagonist's opposite...

The romance was so cute and adorable. It wasn't insta-love but it did develop a bit too quickly in my opinion. I totally ship Kestrel and Arin though!

I love fantasy novels. It's a current obsession of mine. The Winner's Curse was a great fantasy novel example. The book lost a bit a steam in the middle and became a bit boring. The last third of the book picked up speed again. The whole book was great, but the last third was fantastic. There was action, romance, mystery, betrayal, everything I could possibly want! The ending left me shocked and confused, my jaw hanging open. What. The. Heck. I. Need. The. Next. Book. Now.

Waiting on Wednesday (1) ~ City of Heavenly Fire

"Waiting On" Wednesday is an awesome meme created by Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My First "Can't Wait For" unreleased book is City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare which comes out May 27th, 2014!

As I've said before, The Mortal Instruments series was the first YA series I read. This series made me love reading. And now the highly anticipated finale comes out in May. I've been waiting for almost two years!! Of course this is my first, most-prioritized, most-excited-for unpublished book!

"ΕRCHOMAI, SEBASTIAN HAD SAID.

I am coming.

Darkness returns to the Shadowhunter world. In the long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Dark Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris — but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee — even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned . . .

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the world in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!"

Top Ten Tuesday (1) ~ All-Time Favorite Books

Top Ten Tuesday is an awesome weekly meme created by The Broke and Bookish where each week they post a new Top Ten list on various bookish things.

I'll start with one of their first meme questions:

What are your top ten all-time favorite books?

Coming up with this list is always painful! I love too many books and it's so hard to only pick ten.

1. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare - This series was the first YA book & series I read that jump-started my love of reading. This book will always have a special place in my heart <3 I just love all of the action, humor, romance, characters and everything!

2. The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare - After devouring TMI, I started TID and instantly fell in love with reading all over again. Everything about this series oozes perfection. The writing. The setting. The romance. The drama. The characters. E.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.

3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas - I discovered my assassin novel fetish while reading this awesome book. It's action-packed, funny, Hunger Games reminiscent, romantic, and phenomenal.

4. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand - I was deeply impressed with this angel series! This book contains one of the best love triangles ever.

5. Lux by Jennifer L. Armentrout - The humor and the characters in Lux put this series in a league of its own.

6. Divergent by Veronica Roth - This series was initially higher in my list, but the books progressively got worse ;( Veronica Roth is still a great writer and has tons of meaningful quotes. I just didn't like where she took her Divergent series.

7. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead - VA is the stereotypical vampire book only it's done so well. It's hilarious and action-packed. The characters are memorable and amazing.

8. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken - TDM is one of my favorite dystopias. It's a simple concept yet the execution is so well done. The romance is so adorable and the light moments of this series evenly balances out the harshness of the dystopia.

9. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead - The spin-off series of Vampire Academy does not disappoint! Filled with some familiar faces along with some new ones, this series introduces the most adorable ship ever.

10. The Selection by Kiera Cass - Ok so maybe the writing isn't that great. Maybe the characters are frustrating. Maybe this has a really weak love triangle. I don't know but there's just something about this series that makes me love it so much!! Maybe because I'm so invested in Maxamer <3

Well that was my top ten! Trailing behind were The Book Thief and HP. I read those a while ago though so I couldn't really compare them to these which I've read much more recently.

Review: Boundless

Boundless by Cynthia Hand

Page Length: 448 Pages

Rating: 5 Stars

"The past few years have held more surprises than part-angel Clara Gardner could ever have anticipated. Yet from the dizzying highs of first love, to the agonizing low of losing someone close to her, the one thing she can no longer deny is that she was never meant to live a normal life.

Since discovering the special role she plays among the other angel-bloods, Clara has been determined to protect Tucker Avery from the evil that follows her . . . even if it means breaking both their hearts. Leaving town seems like the best option, so she’s headed back to California - and so is Christian Prescott, the irresistible boy from the vision that started her on this journey in the first place.

As Clara makes her way in a world that is frighteningly new, she discovers that the fallen angel who attacked her is watching her every move. And he’s not the only one. . . . With the battle against the Black Wings looming, Clara knows she must finally fulfill her destiny. But it won’t come without sacrifices and betrayal.

In the riveting finale of the Unearthly series, Clara must decide her fate once and for all."

I really can't express how much I love this series. I can't stop gushing about it. I can't stop thinking about it. End of series books usually are disappointments, and I'm glad to say that this book was far from disappointing. Cynthia Hand went out with a bang.

The plot of this book was much darker than the other books. There was a dangerous edge to this book that made it more exciting and epic. I loved the increased action time and the upped paranormalness that this book had.

I always praise Cynthia Hand's stellar writing. It's truly superb, just like her! She's so descriptive, and I love her writing style. Just the way she tells Clara's story is fantastic. This series' plot developed so well over the books. You can see that she organized and planned this all out from the beginning. At suspenseful moments she doesn't just blatantly make clear what she wants to get across to the readers, she lets you think about it and figure it out. It's unique and lovely ;)

I enjoyed the scenery change too! Funnily enough, I was quite familiar with the new setting because I've been to Stanford's campus. I found myself missing Jackson Hole, Wyoming though.

One of the biggest things that I look for throughout a series is character growth. It's what makes the book realistic. It's why I invest so much in these characters. I want to see them grow and flourish. I want to see them develop throughout this story. I want to see how they changed because of what happened in this story. Looking back at the characters in Unearthly and comparing them to who they are in Boundless, I am so impressed with the character growth I've seen. Clara's gone from the cautious, timid, frantic girl, to the calm, powerful, feisty, protective fighter. I. Love. It. Christian has gone from the ignorant guy who doesn't think through his actions before doing, to a sensible guy who is attentive and caring and finally thinks things through. Tucker has learned to be more aggressive, especially over what he wants. *winks* He's gotten so much better at saying what he feels and dealing with the craziness of paranormality. (<--- Wow. According to Google, that's actually a word!)

This is my second favorite love triangle ever! I bet you're wondering what my first favorite is :) Well too bad, I'm not telling. Just kidding! It's Tessa, Jem, and Will from The Infernal Devices. Ok, well back on track: This love triangle was phenomenal. In most love triangle books, the love triangle is either the main focus like Shatter Me or a tiny problem that they quickly solve in the end like The Hunger Games where they spend 300 pages on the war and rebellion and 20 pages on the love triangle. I'm glad to say that this love triangle was neither. It was perfectly balanced with the angel war. It wasn't as heavily focused on but it wasn't thrown into a corner that was quickly resolved. Hand put the perfect amount of focus on the love triangle.

I got really nervous while reading this book. I seriously had no idea who Clara was going to choose because this love triangle is pretty strong to begin with, and it just got tighter in this book. I love how the love triangle builds in each book. It doesn't just develop in one book and not go anywhere in the next. Hand did a great job of making it progress from book to book. I'm going to keep my opinion of this part of the book neutral because if I'm mad, you'll know that Clara chose Christian. If I'm happy and ecstatic, you'll know that Clara chose Tucker. So yeah. I think you'll like the ending either way though! Yup that's right, I'm not telling!!

The romance was so adorable. There were significantly less romantic moments in this book (until the end of course) but the moments of romance were so adorable. There are so many swoon-worthy lines <3

"'Haven't you guessed by now?' I say, my heart hammering. 'My home is you.'"
^^ Just take a moment to "awwww" over that ;)

The only thing that I really didn't like about this book was the lack of Tucker Avery. He was in this book but not as much as the others. I understand why, but I really missed him!!

The ending was great. It was a bit too perfect, but hey, I'm not gonna complain! The epilogue of this book was perfection. No joke. The ending of the Unearthly series is PERFECTION. I said it! PERFECTION.

I can't believe I'm done with this series. I cherish Unearthly and am quite happy with the end of this book.
